Surfing makes up a huge part of my life. I grew up in Orange County, California in what is known as the heart of the surf industry.
Most of my better surfing in Orange County was done at the Santa Ana River Jetties. Fall combo swells often make for insane peaky
barrels and enough juice to pin you to the sand, break boards, and sometimes necks. It was in the Newport area where I first met Al Dove
(a Lightning Bolt airbrusher from the 70's). Al was known as one of the best surfboard airbrush artists in the world.
Al was best known for his Silver Surfer airbrush done for MR (four time world champ). I began riding Al's boards and hanging around his shop watching him shape and airbrush. It was then I fell in love with the airbrush and noticed an airbrush class at a local community college. That is the only formal class
I have taken but plan on taking some soon. For a few years I messed around with airbrush doing some signs and works on canvas
but eventually got tired of all the set up and clean up involved with airbrushing. I had done some brush work on top of airbrush and figured I would try
that out and ended up liking it. So off and on I have been brush painting for quite some time but only for the last year and a half have I been painting consistently
and working on selling my stuff. I love to create locations that don't exist but that a surfer would love and these lineups never have people in them because I hate crowded lineups. Most of my paintings have very vibrant colors but I will be looking to tone things down here and go some different directions with my style.
The current artists that inspire me are Wade Koniakowsky, John Coopwood, Tobin, Ogden, Pete Tillack, Rick Griffin, Jon Severson, Robb Havassy, and Patrick Parker. There are many other artists out there who I think are awesome but these are the main ones.
I currently paint as a stress relief and as a second income. I serve as a missionary in Mexico and this is my way of supporting my surfing habit
without touching missionary support for items such as surfboards, wetsuits, and surf trips. It is my goal to be able to use my talents more and
more for God's glory through a free surf school in Ensenada this summer and possibly setting up some art workshops.
